This program is open to children born in 2013. Players in the Discovery program practice for one hour, once a week on a Saturday or Sunday. The first component of the season is 10 weeks long followed by a break during the Christmas season. The second component of the season is 10 weeks long and finishes is with a game session (Jamboree Festival). In total your child will attend 20 one-hour practices.
Discovery players will be on the ice with no less than 35 other children and no more than 48 children. The NEZ aims to have 40-45 children skating on the ice together during their one-hour practice time.
This is a parent volunteer based program. On ice instructors are usually parents of the children in the program. Each practice session will require a lead instructor (lead parent) and multiple other parents to be successful. Ideally, our instructor to player ratio is 1:5. If you are interested in volunteering as a Lead Instructor or Assistant Instructor please contact your Director OR register with the NEZ.
Instructors follow the Hockey Canada Initiation Program that is provided through the ProSmart Sports Learning System. Instructors will be given access to the program early in the season. Each practice will be organized in a series of stations. Children will work with an instructor in a small group for a short period of time. When it is time to switch stations the Lead Instructor will let Assistant Instructors know. Lead Instructors are responsible for planning and implementing the different drills/fun games at each practice. Assistant Instructors are expected to watch the drills provided by ProSmart Sports Learning System and communicate with the Lead Instructor to ensure the practice sessions run smoothly and effectively.
This program is meant to be FUN. Even though the children are working hard in small groups this does not mean that the practice will not be fun. Instructors are encouraged to make drills into competitions, races and games in order to keep the attention of the young players.
Discovery players will not be assigned teams as they have in the past. Instead, Instructors and players will work together during their practice sessions.
